7 Ways to Relieve A Toothache At Home

How Sugar Affects Your Teeth

As we all find a new normal during the COVID-19 Pandemic, many things are not quite the same as they have always been. Dental care is no exception, and there may be instances where you are advised to relieve a toothache at home for a brief time. So what can you do?

1. Salt Water Rinse

Rinsing your mouth out with a salt water solution can help remove plaque and other irritating substances that may be causing pain. It can also help dislodge food particles, and aid in healing oral wounds. A salt water rinse is a simple and easy first response that can relieve a toothache at home.

2. Clove oil

Cloves are known for their pain relief and antiseptic properties, and smell amazing! Mixing clove oil with a carrier oil, such as olive or almond oil, then dabbing it near the affected area with a cotton ball can be a natural alternative to an over the counter analgesic gel.

3. Peppermint Tea Bag

Used like a compress a peppermint tea bag can be soothing and pleasant. After using the bag to make tea, you can press the warm bag on the affected area, or for a cold compress, pop it in the freezer long enough to cool it down, and do the same.

4. Cold or Hot Compress

Using a cold compress can help reduce any swelling in the area. A warm compress can also provide a simple way to relieve a toothache at home. They’re also easy remedies many people can access at home at any time.

5. Flossing and Brushing

Don’t underestimate the effect that food particles can have on your mouth. Making sure that all food is dislodged, and plaque isn’t able to continue to decay teeth or irritate gums can go a long way towards helping with some toothaches, and preventing others.

6. Chew Guava Leaves

The anti inflammation properties of guava leaves can address the toothache pain, and aid in bringing swelling down. One way to do this is simply to chew guava leaves, as crushing them triggers their anti inflammation properties.

7. Crushed Garlic

Crushing garlic into a paste to place on the affected area can help fight bacteria, and discourage plaque build up. Garlic has a good reputation for the power of its medicinal properties. Alternatively, you can simply chew a garlic clove (although you may want to add salt!) to achieve the same results.

Toothaches can be a sign of a deeper issue. If your toothache persists, call a dentist to determine whether or not you have an urgent need that has to be cared for in a dental office. A dentist can help you evaluate your unique situation and determine next steps with you, based on your needs.

If you need to consult with a dentist during this time about your current dental care needs, call our Leawood dentist to talk with a dentist who may be able to help you find out more about this topic, and improve your oral health.
