What You Can Expect From our Family Dentistry Office

Family DentistryIn our family dentistry office, our goal is to keep you, our patient, in the best possible oral health. We do this by examining and cleaning your teeth on a regular basis. We would prefer to do so twice a year but at a minimum, once a year. This way we can identify small health issues like cavities before they can spread and create an uncomfortable situation. This ongoing care is your best defense against early tooth loss or even the occasional toothache.

What we do in our family dentistry office.

When looking for a family dentist, it is important to select someone that is passionate about oral health and an expert in their trade. We are exactly that. We realize that dentistry is a combination of both science and art. Through both education and experience, we have honed our craft to ensure that each patient we treat receives the best possible dental care and beautiful results.

When visiting our office, patients can expect to receive comprehensive dental care. We focus on preventing oral health issues and are more than capable of treating a health issue that is already in the advanced stages. but if a health problem arises, we are more than capable of treating it and restoring the mouth to perfect health. Many of the solutions we use to do so can serve a dual purpose of improving a patient's oral health and appearance. Take, for example, dental bonding, which can help to decrease the sensitivity one is feeling in the teeth while also covering up stains.

Simultaneously, a dental crown can be used to restore a cracked tooth but it can also improve the overall size and shape of it. By addressing both the form and function of teeth during our procedures, we can help a patient to love his or her smile again. In fact, when a patient schedules a dental exam to discuss sensitivity or a toothache, the patient needs to let us know what he or she does not like about his or her smile. We might be able to correct both at the same time.

Tips for selecting a family dentistry office.

When a patient is looking for a family dentistry office, there are several things that he or she needs to be aware of. First, they need to be centrally located to where the patient lives, works or goes to school. This way, it is easy to schedule an appointment for a professional teeth cleaning procedure or for emergency dental work. We are conveniently located and would be happy to treat the patient and his or her entire family.

We also recommend that you read patient reviews. We are pleased that our patients have taken the time to review our practice and would be happy to share those reviews with you. The best way to learn what a dental office is really like is to hear what other patients have to say and to visit the office for yourself. We invite you to stop by Asha Dental, meet our staff, and have a consultation so that you can learn more about our philosophy of care and the approach that we take to keeping you and your family healthy - both now and as you age.

There Are Distinct Advantages of Visiting a Family Dentist in Leawood

Family DentistAs a family dentist in Leawood we know that visiting our office has specific advantages, both for you. We know that nobody enjoys going to the dentist and that most people would avoid it if at all possible. The family dentistry environment creates a situation where families come in for their appointments together and can hold each other accountable for proper dental hygiene. Families that come in together tend to have better oral health. This is because when you make it a habit of seeing your family dentistry services provider regularly, we can do two things.

First, we will always clean your teeth to remove the extra buildup of plaque. When plaque is not allowed to accumulate, there is less of a chance that you will have cavities or decay. Secondly, when we see you once every six months, we examine your teeth for potential problems. We deal with any oral health issues before they have a chance to spread the infection to other teeth. From a preventative medicine standpoint, which is the basis for family dentistry, this is a winning scenario for both of us.

From our perspective, as a family dentist, having the trust and confidence of the family is a big deal. We know how prevalent dental anxiety  is. Therefore, it is important that we build this relationship over time. In the case of family dentistry, sometimes we can build it over generations. Visiting the dentist for a procedure is a scary prospect for some. Often people are entering an unfamiliar environment, surrounded by people they do not know, and then having to deal with the sounds and smells of everything that goes into a dental office. Throw in the dentist chair, and an uncomfortable dental environment can cause anxiety.

On the other hand, families that come in to see the family dentist already know the dentist. They are familiar with the place because they have been there before, either for themselves or for a family member. In addition, they trust the family dentist, so it makes it much easier to relax and let go of the anxiety, which in turn makes the entire procedure far more palatable.

As a family dentist, we also offer patients convenience. When you have a family, different age groups require different kinds of treatments and procedures. We do not want you to have to run all over the city to get these treatments at different times. To help with this, we have brought the majority of the work done by general dentistry in-house, allowing you to get the procedures you need in one convenient location.

Whether you need X-rays or digital imaging, braces or dentures, or if you need to have an extraction, all of these and much more can be done right here at the family dentist clinic. This saves you time, and from experience, it ensures that your family will receive all of the necessary dental work.

The Convenience of Visiting a Family Dentist

Family DentistThe idea of a family dentist is one that closely mimics the idea of a family general practitioner or doctor. Its success is also very similar because it relies on the same trust and relationship that family doctors and a family dentist have in common. We understand that nobody ever really wants to go in to see either a doctor or a family dentist. Humans have an intrinsic discomfort with medical procedures, especially when it involves you. On the other hand, the families who come in on a regular basis to visit the family dentist find that the procedures they need are routine, with the maintenance helping to prevent emergency dental needs. At the same time, families who come in together often hold each other more accountable to keeping their oral hygiene routines, which means they have better cared for teeth overall. There are numerous benefits to having a family dentist.

From our perspective, the trust and relationship we have with families, often generations of families, plays a tremendous role in the work we are able to do for them. Think about it from the perspective of a child. When a child goes in to see the dentist or the doctor, they are in an uncomfortable and unfamiliar environment most of the time. There are strange sounds and smells, equipment that needs to be put in their mouth, and the dreaded dentist chair. All of this can cause a child and most adults to have a level of anxiety. On the other hand, when a child is coming in to see the family dentist, it is typically someone they are familiar with, having been to the office with a family member before. The friendly face of the family dentist can help to ease some of those fears, and people instinctively trust a doctor who has already treated other family members. This easing of fears goes a long way in helping with diagnoses and getting procedures done with as little fuss as possible.

From a purely convenience standpoint, there is nothing convenient about having to take multiple members of a family to different appointments. Juggling the timing, along with work and school schedules, as well as finding the right providers can be a hassle. At the family dentist clinic, we know how hard this can be, and so have two simple ways to make your life easier. First, we can have all the major family dentist procedures done right here at our family dentist clinic. Whether you need an x-ray or an extraction, braces or dentures, whatever the needs of your family, we can do them in one place. The only exception is extremely specialized work, in which case, we will help you find the best provider. The second thing we have done is to help streamline our scheduling so we can accommodate families. If we can get the entire family in and maximize your time by combining appointments, we know that we will not only save you time and effort, but that you are far more likely to come in together.

There are Multiple Benefits to Visiting our Leawood Family Dentist Office

Leawood Family DentistWhat is the importance of a Leawood family dentist? There are many ways to answer this question, but perhaps the best way is to pose another question: “Why not have a family dentist?” A family dentist is someone who provides services to the entire family, creating a number of intrinsic benefits common to many service providers who service an entire family.  From a dentist point of view, it is even more beneficial when you take into consideration how many people suffer from dental anxiety. We strongly encourage our families to take advantage of the fact that we are a family dentist and to come in together, whenever possible, for routine maintenance and cleaning. What the families who do this have discovered is that when they make it a family habit to visit us, the entire family stays healthier and they have an overall improvement in their oral health and hygiene. In addition, kids learn very young to trust and rely on the family dentist for any dental health needs they may have, much the same way as families have learned to rely on the family general practitioner.

As the familiarity between us and your family improves, so too will that critical trust factor, which is something family dentists rely on very heavily. Consider it from a child's perspective for a second. Coming to a medical service center of any type is something naturally scary for a child. There are unfamiliar surroundings, strange sounds and smells, and the innate fear of the unknown. When, however, you add in the smiling face of a trusted family practitioner in the form of your family dentist, much of that anxiety dissipates. Since the child has previously seen this person as a friend and someone who treats Mom or Dad, they are no longer as concerned about the procedures or what goes on in the chair. Additionally, we have discovered that parents who make it a habit to come in with their children are also more inclined to trust the dentist and have their own oral health needs taken care of.Besides the ability to build trust with the family, there are other very tangible benefits for a family who sees a Leawood family dentist. The first among these is the ability to save time.

When you have different services providers for different members of the family, you will find yourself juggling schedules and driving from place to place to ensure everyone is getting what they need. On the other hand, when the entire family sees the same family dentist, we are able to provide you with all the services under one roof. For general services from fillings to extractions and from cleanings to x-rays, we are able to offer all of that in the clinic, so you do not have to go anywhere else. In a the same vein, families do not want to be juggling schedules, so we have a booking system that allows you to book each other's appointments in congruence or relationship with each other. This way, when you and the family come in to see a Leawood family dentist, all your bases are covered at the same time.

Three Things About Orthodontics a Family Dentist Wants You to Know

Family DentistAs a family dentist, we use orthodontics to straighten teeth and improve the oral health of our patients. While most people associate orthodontics as a procedure for vanity, this solution is equally important to your health. Teeth that are crooked are more likely to get food stuck in between them, have plaque buildup, and get cavities. Additionally, if your teeth are crooked or your jaw is misaligned, you may be putting additional pressure on certain teeth, causing them to wear out more quickly than the others. Straightening them can help prevent some of these common problems while also giving you a beautiful smile. If you are interested in getting started or learning more, we encourage you to call our office and schedule a consultation. In the meantime, here are three things you should know about orthodontics:

You are in control.

In years past, there was only one way to straighten teeth: metal braces. These are still used because they are highly effective and the best solution for children. Fortunately, for many people, there are now additional solutions as well. For example, some people do not need a full braces treatment, but simply need to create a little more space in their mouth using spacers or expanders. Others, preferring a more discreet solution, can straighten teeth using clear aligners. The aligners look like a clear plastic retainer, and they surround the teeth. Both aligners and braces work using the same basic concept: pressure is applied consistently, and this pressure moves teeth into position. With braces, this is done using a series of brackets and wires that are adjusted regularly. With aligners, you simply switch them out every couple of weeks for the next one in the series. If neither of these options sounds good to you, we can also provide you with cosmetic solutions to address some basic challenges. For example, in our family dentist office, we can close gaps in between teeth using dental veneers. The key to remember is that you are in control of your orthodontics treatment and can decide the solution that you feel will work best for your goals and your lifestyle.

Your routine may be impacted.

The orthodontics solution you select will have some impact on your daily routine. If you wear metal braces, the impact will be the most significant, since you will need to adjust how and what you eat along with how you brush and floss your teeth. This can take some getting used to, but it is important. When wearing clear aligners, the adjustments are less severe, since they come out to eat and brush. However, you will need to become accustomed to limiting how frequently you snack, since you are not supposed to eat with aligners in and they need to remain in place for 22 hours per day. As a family dentist, we can provide you with tips and resources to help you make the transition.

It takes time.

As a family dentist, we know that it takes time for orthodontics to work. Teeth must be moved steadily, yet gradually. Otherwise, your teeth and roots could become damaged. You can help keep your treatment on schedule by keeping your teeth clean and healthy, having them professionally cleaned bi-annually, and keeping all of your scheduled dental appointments.

Leawood Family Dentist Care: Keeping The Family’s Teeth Health in One Place

Leawood Family DentistVisiting your Leawood family dentist may not be at the top of your to-do list, but it definitely needs to be something you do at least once every six months. Families who come in to the family dentist in Leawood on a regular basis have discovered that their teeth tend to be in much better condition. There are numerous reasons for this, the most prominent being that families who share a family dentist tend to hold each other more accountable and are more likely to come in for regularly scheduled visits. These visits help make a profound difference on the quality of a person's teeth. For our Leawood family dentist office, there are distinct advantages to serving as a family dentist. The most important for us is the sense of trust and reliability we build up with our families over the generations. This trust allows us to provide you with the treatment you need to stay in excellent oral health. Often, it can be very stressful to visit the dentist. This is known as dental anxiety, and it is extremely common.

When you are visiting an unfamiliar dentist, it becomes even more apparent. Going to a place you do not know, all the sights and sounds of a dental office, the equipment that has to be placed in your mouth, and the dentist chair are all elements that play in and have the effect of increasing your stress levels. On the other hand, when you come in to see our Leawood family dentist office, you are coming in to a place you will be familiar with. Since we are a family practice, the chances are that you will come in with other members, the kids, for example, of the family and hence it will not be unfamiliar. Pair that with the smiling familiar face of your family dentist, and there is a level of comfort that helps to offset some of the anxiety, making it possible for you to get the treatments you need.

As a family dentist, we have learned that families need two non-medical things when coming in to see our Leawood family dentist office. The first is the ability to schedule in coordination with each other. Often, families are extremely busy, making it very hard to come back repeatedly to the dentist office. To help you with this, we have a streamlined scheduling system and a friendly staff who will work with you to ensure you can coordinate all your appointments in a way that maximizes the use of the time you do have with your dentist. We can even work with school and work schedules. In addition to this, families want to have all of their services within the same clinic. We are able to provide all the basic family services in our dental offices. This means that no matter what the procedure, unless it is extremely specialized, you and your family will never have go anywhere else.

Common Health Myths Debunked by a Family Dentist in Leawood

Family Dentist in LeawoodAs a family dentist in Leawood, we treat patients who are suffering from a variety of health concerns. With a focus on preventative care, our goal is to quickly identify and treat the problem. Afterward, we work to educate our patients so the issue does not repeat itself. During these conversations, we have discovered that many people operate under false assumptions that have been perpetuated by myths. Dental myths are common, but they can also be dangerous. For example, the myth that flossing is optional can increase your risk of getting gum disease. For this reason, we have made a list of a few common myths we hear and our answers to them.

Myth – Only sugar causes cavities.

As a family dentist in Leawood, we wish this were the case because it would be easier for our patients to avoid sugar and avoid getting cavities. In truth, cavities are formed when the bacteria in your mouth feed on sugar or starch, creating plaque. The plaque secretes acid that attacks the tooth and creates decay. It is important, therefore, to avoid foods that are highly acidic or high in sugar or starch. Things like soda, lemons, and pasta can all harm the teeth just as much as a candy bar. We recommend that you rinse your mouth after eating or drinking and to brush your teeth three times a day to prevent plaque from building up in the first place.

Myth – Children are at risk for cavities, but adults are not.

Again, it would be nice if this were true. The reality is that everyone is at risk for getting cavities, including babies and seniors. In fact, there has been an increase in the number of seniors getting cavities from dry mouth caused by medications. Regardless of how old you are, visiting a family dentist in Leawood twice a year is a good idea.

Myth – Root canals are only necessary if you have an infected tooth.

We perform root canals to remove the infected portion of the tooth and to treat teeth that have severe cavities. We also perform them to treat roots that have been damaged. This can happen due to an accident, grinding your teeth at night, or some other dental trauma. You can even damage your roots if you have too much dental work completed in quick succession. This makes it important to time dental work appropriately and gives your teeth time to rest if you are having a full smile makeover.

Myth – Diet soda is okay for your teeth.

All soda contains acid, and acid can cause the enamel on your teeth to erode. You have a limited amount of enamel on your teeth, and this is what prevents them from becoming sensitive. It is unwise to drink a lot of soda simply because it does not contain sugar while ignoring the acid content. We recommend drinking water, and if you must drink soda, rinse your mouth afterward. Also, be sure to brush with a fluoride toothpaste.

Why a Family Dentist in Leawood Recommends Using Media

Family Dentist in LeawoodWhen you visit a family dentist in Leawood, there is zero chance of you leaving without talking about teeth brushing.  It is that important.  In order for your kids to have healthy teeth and gums, they must brush their teeth on a regular basis.  This means taking the time to do it for two minutes, twice a day.  Most kids simply don't want to do this because they are either uninterested or perceivably too busy.  Our job, working with you as parents, is to change their mind. We want our young patients to become excited about oral health and participate in it willingly so that as they get older, they will continue to have healthy habits.

As a family dentist, we realize that this sounds easier than it actually is.  While many parents have tried forcing kids to brush or even standing there with a timer, we are more interested in finding ways that are easy to implement by focusing on what kids already enjoy.  This is where media comes in.  Most kids enjoy using a tablet or smartphone.  In fact, many toddlers already know how to operate them.  This starts early as baby's get used to you taking pictures, and kids watch their favorite cartoon on Netflix.  Regardless of how often your children use electronics, the chances are that they would use them more often if allowed.  Fortunately, you can use your smartphone and tablet as a way to encourage good health, not just for entertainment.

  • Teach them.  You can play a video tutorial showing your kids how to brush their teeth properly.  This works better than constantly reminding them, and the videos are short and easy to watch.  This is important because a lot of kids look like they are brushing but are really only wiggling the toothbrush around in their mouth.  As a family dentist in Leawood, we know that if they aren’t brushing correctly, they are probably leaving a lot of bacteria and plaque on their teeth.
  • Sing and dance.  Find out what their favorite song is and play it for them while they brush. You can play it for the full two minutes and soon they will be dancing and brushing.  This is a great way to start their day and may even put them in a better mood.  You can play a different song every day to make it fun and more interesting.
  • Play videos.  If you visit the American Dental Association website, they have a section of two minute videos that you can play for your kids.  Instead of boring, information clips these are actually popular cartoons like Adventure Time.  This way your kids will be interested in watching and brushing.  It works so well that the time will pass before they even know it and simultaneously, they will learn to brush for the full amount of time.

As a family dentist in Leawood, our goal is for your child to learn healthy habits that they can keep throughout their lifetime. This way their risk of getting cavities will be greatly reduced and common toothaches can be prevented.

A Family Dentist Can Encourage Healthy Habits in Kids

Family DentistAs a family dentist, we strive to establish a longstanding relationship with your entire family - one that you can count on for generations.  We want to take care of your children's teeth, and maybe even their children's teeth. In today's mobile world, we do not experience this as often, but there are times when we will see generations of the same family coming in for their oral health and wellness checkups or cleanings. As a family dentist, these preventative visits are by far our favorite. They allow us to keep your teeth in good working order while catching any prospective problems and nipping them in the bud. From the first cavity to the need for dentures, as your family dentist, serving your every dental need is a privilege and a pleasure.

From our perspective, the faster we can start with caring for a younger member of your family, the better it is for everyone. We advise all parents that they should consider bringing in the little one as soon as they have most of their baby teeth or at least, prior to starting school. This allows us to do two very important functions. First it allows us to conduct a thorough examination of the child's mouth. Specializing in family dentistry means that we can catch any problems that may be coming down the road (like overcrowding) and take steps to correct them early. Equally as important, during that first visit, we can take the time to build a relationship with your child. Dental health and hygiene are an ongoing concern, so the sooner we can get your child to view us as an ally and a friend the more likely they are to return of their own bidding. Fears, including the fear of dentists, sets in at an early age.  Visiting our office, where they learn that there is nothing to fear, does wonders for a child's confidence and establishes the foundation for lifelong dental care.

The largest complaint a family dentist hears is from parents having difficulty getting a child to brush their teeth. For some reason, many children have decided that it is a personal punishment against them to brush. Since caring for a young child or children, can be challenging, we can help with suggestions for making teeth brushing easier and more enjoyable.  Since children tend to view the white coat and the spotless office as something to be respected, it puts us in a position to both educate and encourage them to be healthy. Being in this position of medical authority also allows us to reinforce your rules, and remind your children of the importance of brushing twice per day. A national study recently showed that the partnership between dentists and parents has resulted in over 93% of parents being able to get their kids to brush at least once, and mostly twice, per day. Working together, we can accomplish this and also help with things like getting your child to stop eating too many sweets. As a family dentist, we are your partner in health care and are available to assist with whatever your family needs.
