Comparing CEREC with Traditional Crowns

Sep 1, 2016 | Uncategorized

CEREC technology has revolutionized the process of completing dental restorations. Instead of needing to involve the dental lab, we can create restorations here at our dental office. This means that we can handle your dental issues in-house, without the need for a third-party, which can, in turn, save you a significant amount of time. Our restorations are still just as durable and natural looking but without all of the hassle.

Traditional Crowns vs. CEREC: The Process

Typically if you visit a dental office in need of a restoration because you have an infected tooth, the first part of the process will be to remove the infection. The same is true if you have a significant amount of dental decay. Once the infection is gone and the tooth is ready to be restored, it will need to be prepared. The preparation of the tooth involves removing a portion of the dental enamel so that once the crown is placed it can fit securely without causing a significant impact on the teeth around it.  This is where the similarities between the process of receiving a traditional crown and CEREC crown end.

With a traditional crown, an impression will then be made of your mouth and measurements taken, which will then be sent to the dental lab for a new crown to be created. Since your tooth will be sensitive due to the enamel loss, a temporary crown will be secured in place using removable glue. You will then go home and wear your temporary crown for several weeks while the new one is created. This can be inconvenient since temporary crowns are not very durable or secure. Finally, you will return to the dentist to have the temporary crown removed and the permanent one bonded in place.

The CEREC process is different because we take digital images that are then uploaded into our computer software. The software creates a 3D image of the tooth and a blueprint that is then sent to our milling machine. Your new tooth will essentially be printed while you wait.  This may take an hour or so, but once done, it will be bonded in place using dental cement and you will be free to go.  There is no need to wear a temporary crown and no need to return for a second appointment.  In only a few hours, you will be ready to enjoy your newly restored tooth.

For anyone with a busy schedule or someone who simply likes fast results, CEREC is a far better solution than traditional dental crowns. Since both look natural and are durable, there is no drawback to saving yourself time by using new technology.
